IT

Below you can find a number of useful resources that you might need for your society.

Mailing Lists

For info and support regarding mailing lists, please contact the Societies Exec IT Officer during term-time or the Activities Officer.

Society Websites

There are many different options for your society website; you'll have to find out from your previous committee members which option you have.

Society Microsites

The UBU website can turn your society listing into a fully-functioning society website. It's easy to log in and update, so this is a great option for those who don't have an experienced web manager. You can create extra pages, events and news items. You'll be given a society theme which you can customise yourself. Examples are available so contact us if you're interested.

UBU Website Listing

UBU.org.uk gets thousands of visits a week and societies is the most popular section by far. It is listed high by search engines and is often the first port of call for people trying to find your society. The UBU website has an up to date directory of all societies, along with a listing for each. This should include a description of your society and up to date contact details, along with a link to your website if applicable. If this information is not updated people won't be able to contact you. Once you have access you'll be able to log in and edit this information yourself.

To get access, submit the Societies Access Form

University Hosted Websites

If your web address is www.bristol.ac.uk/depts/union/yoursociety
This is basic web hosting from the university, you're able to have static pages only, meaning you'll have to update news and events manually.

To get access:

  1. Fill and hand in Form G6
  2. Then you'll have to download the program "SSH Secure Shell Client" (see the university web pages for more information.)
The path to your society webspace should be /info/www/Depts/Union/society (note this is case sensitive!).

External Websites

If your society has an experienced webmaster who wants more freedom, or you have a complex website already, you'll probably need to host your website externally. Many hosting companies offer the freedom for database driven websites and custom scripting - however these can be expensive. Make sure you have a plan for how you're going to transfer access when your committee leaves.

Web Addresses

It can be a good idea to get a domain name such as yoursociety.com, this way your website address will stay the same whatever you do with your website. The union can register the address at a competitive rate for you and invoice your society, plus you'll always have access to it and it'll renew automatically. You'll need to contact the UBU Webmaster for more info.
