"The University of Bristol Students’ Union (UBU) exists to promote the advancement of education of students at the University of Bristol for the public benefit through the following objects:
• Promoting the interests and welfare of students at the University of Bristol during their course of study and representing, supporting and advising members;
• Being the recognised representative channel between students and the University of Bristol and any other external bodies; and
• Providing social, cultural, sporting and recreational activities and forums for discussions and debate for the personal development of its members.
"As part of this, many clubs and societies are affiliated with UBU including the University of Bristol Christian Union. Clubs and societies operate autonomously in creating their own individual constitutions and rightly, are responsible for organising their own student-led activity. Our role is to facilitate this activity rather than dictate it.
"We however require all affiliated clubs and societies to abide by our Code of Conduct (see section 12 of the club and society Committee Handbook) and our Equality Policy. They are also required to operate within the law and uphold the reputation of the University and the Students’ Union. At the point at which we become aware of activity outside these obligations we will intervene.
"We are aware of a communication made by the Christian Union that outlined intent to introduce male only speakers at selected events. An investigation is being led by the UBU full-time elected officers to gather evidence and examine the appropriate route forward with reference to sanctions made available in the Code of Conduct. However it should be made clear the outcome of the investigation will only be established once the evidence has been examined. We are also now following our formal complaints procedure.
"To protect all of our members we feel it is important that these procedures are followed correctly. We wish to avoid reactionary measures that could be damaging to the democracy, equality and diversity of the student body as a whole."
