Spice Girls, Urinals and the Magic Roundabout

A look back at a few of the more, erm, unusual AGM motions....

Deep in the Union Archives lies the ancient remains of AGMs past. Our intrepid reporters have dug out some hidden treasures from the past 20 years...

1989 - Beer and Creme Eggs Motion

This motion was to persuade the Union to provide a venue for the annual RAG Beer and Creme Egg Race - an “essential part of university life”.

1992 - Urinals Motion

BUCA complained that the height of Union Urinals meant that short people were discriminated against.

1992 - Magic Roundabout

To rename the Mandela Bar “The Magic Roundabout” since Nelson Mandela “is no longer imprisoned”!

1992 - Exotic Literature

‘92 was clearly a golden year, this motion suggested stocking porn in the union shop, “such as Penthouse”

1997 - Spice Girls

“The Spice Girls stand for everything that is good about Women’s Liberation” And so make Mel C the Honorary Vice President of the AU. The Motion also aimed to rename the Union shop “The Spice Girls’ Confectionary Emporium”

Sadly none of these motions passed, which I’m sure you’ll agree is a tragedy. Fingers crossed for 2010....
