Candidate for the position of Vice President Activities

GO WEST, life is peaceful there!

  • Committee member for UBES (Expeditions Society), one of the largest societies in the university. Voted Best Society at the UBU society awards
  • Best of Bristol (BoB) lectures team member
  • Student trustee for UBU
  • Previous employee at UBU Info Point and Welcome Point

  • Fair Access to societies for disadvantaged students policy:

Currently it is very difficult for many students to get involved with societies, whether this be due to financial difficulty or because of a disability.  I hope to work alongside the VP Welfare and Equality to ensure that every member of the Union has an equal opportunity to get involved with any society they’d like to.

  • Alternative space for societies during the Union refurbishment and Union to stay open longer on the weekend to make up for lack of space:

With the Union refurbishment well under way there is increasingly less and less space for societies to practise and hold events, discussions and socials.  I aim to ensure that societies have the space they need both in the short term and the long term.  I will make sure that the Union is in constant discussion with students and society leaders about what they need.  In particular I hope to be able to enable societies to make use of the university buildings (e.g. Victoria Rooms) and venues in the local community.

  • Ensure a smoother Freshers’ Fair:

The Freshers’ Fair is a great way to find out about all the different societies and sports clubs (over 240) you can get involved with whilst at university.  However it is notoriously hectic and often off-putting.  I aim to provide more information about the various societies and sports clubs and how to join them well ahead of Fresh.  Alongside the space available in the Union I also hope to once again make use of the Victoria Rooms and potentially the Great Hall within the Wills Memorial Building for the Freshers’ Fair.

  • Campaign to ensure societies still receive as much grant money during the refurbishment as they have done in the past:

Due to the refurbishment the Union is likely to have a much more limited budget over the next few years.  I aim to campaign to ensure societies still have the opportunity to receive as much grant as they have done in previous years.
