The Boat Club is one of the largest and most decorated sports clubs in the university, with over 150 active members and a rich history of success in both domestic and international competitions.
Regardless of whether you start this year as an expert rower, or if you have never set foot in a boat, we are able to offer you a great sporting experience. We are easily one of the top 10 rowing universities in the country and, with the imminent arrival of a new £1 million boathouse, the future looks exceedingly bright.
So, if you want to become incredibly fit, win lots of medals or are simply keen to have a great time with a host of new friends, we are the club for you!
"Rowing is a sport for dreamers. As long as you put in the work, you can own the dream"
Something that makes rowing great is that it uses every major muscle group. This means that you gain fitness more quickly than with almost any other sport. The boat bears your weight, so it's also a low impact activity which carries little risk of injury.
At Bristol we compete in at least 20 events per year, including the British Universities Championships and Henley Royal Regatta. In the past three years we've won at Henley Woman's Regatta, had both male and female crews compete at the European Universities Championships and collected multiple BUCS medals.
The boat club has one of the best, if not the best, social calendars of any society in Bristol. Our social secretaries are charged with organising a dizzying array of events, including: twice yearly balls on the nights of our head race and of the Varsity Boat Race; a Christmas formal; a summer barbecue, and almost weekly socials. This is in addition to the external events that the boat club attend such as the AU Ball, water sports bar crawl and the thrice-yearly SCORE socials.
We’ve also been fortunate in the past year to enjoy the hospitality of Sperry Top-Sider at Henley Royal Regatta – where our alumni also hosted a free drinks reception – and that of another sponsor, A-Gas International, at an annual meal.
If anything on this page has aroused even the slightest amount of interest in you, then we’d say you owe it to yourself to give rowing with us a go!
If you’ve never rowed before, you’ll want to get in touch with one of our Novice Captains: email them by clicking on one of their pictures below, come and say Hi at Fresher’s fair or get a taste of rowing training at our novice ‘Fresh Sport’ event.
If you have rowed before, we’d encourage you to get in touch with the relevant Senior Captain straight away as Sam and Jenna are already busy planning for the new season. However, failing that, they’ll also be there at Fresher’s Fair and are running a Senior ‘Fresh Sport’ event.
