Schools projects

SCA does a wide variety of work in schools within the local community. We work across primary, secondary and special educational needs schools offering support and assistance. Volunteering in schools is obviously excellent for those considering a career in education or youth work - offering concrete experience of working with young people. Even if you aren't considering such a career, however, work in schools is still extremely rewarding and enjoyable! SCA volunteers take on a huge variety of different roles in local schools every year. For example, amongst other things last year's volunteers:

  • Ran group mentoring sessions with young people who regularly truant - helping them to catch up with work and generallyregain the confidence to attend regularly.
  • Helped support teachers in classrooms across a wide variety of subjects, doing small group teaching, offering individual support or just being an extra pair of hands!
  • Ran one-to one mentoring with young people who are underachieving at school - offering support and guidance to help them achieve their potential.
  • Helped primary age children to read, help with sporting activities, or just get covered in glitter and glue
  • Helped by 'buddying' pupils with special educational needs, either in a mainstream or specialist school - supporting their learning and development.
