Projects

Projects are at the heart of SCA. Every year, some new projects begin and others stop, but at the moment we operate about 25 projects in the community, covering an enormous variety of subjects and types of work. Each one is managed by one or two student volunteers who organise the project team; all projects are overseen by the SCA Co-ordinator. Some of the projects work with an outside organisation or charity.

We are now looking for new Project Coordinators for all projects that will lead these projects next academic year.  Click HERE to find out more about being a PC and how to apply.

    READ International

READ International is the UK's one-stop-shop for book donations. READ International have a network of regional student-volunteer-led book projects, based at 45 British Universities, accepting ANY disused books from anyone and everyone in the UK. We sort the books, matching them to the Tanzanian/Ugandan syllabus and, if relevant, we send them to East Africa. Any book not relevant to send (we don't take religious/political books for example) is sold online to generate much needed funding. If it can't be sent or sold, we recycle it, generating more funding. It's a simple process. COLLECT, SORT, GENERATE, DISTRIBUTE, RECYCLE. After we've collected books from UK schools we even deliver a free workshop to educate school children about global citizenship and sustainability.

    Schools projects

SCA does a wide variety of work in schools within the local community. We work across primary, secondary and special educational needs schools offering support and assistance. Volunteering in schools is obviously excellent for those considering a career in education or youth work - offering concrete experience of working with young people. Even if you aren't considering such a career, however, work in schools is still extremely rewarding and enjoyable! SCA volunteers take on a huge variety of different roles in local schools every year. For example, amongst other things last year's volunteers:

    • Ran group mentoring sessions with young people who regularly truant - helping them to catch up with work and generallyregain the confidence to attend regularly.
    • Helped support teachers in classrooms across a wide variety of subjects, doing small group teaching, offering individual support or just being an extra pair of hands!
    • Ran one-to one mentoring with young people who are underachieving at school - offering support and guidance to help them achieve their potential.
    • Helped primary age children to read, help with sporting activities, or just get covered in glitter and glue
    • Helped by 'buddying' pupils with special educational needs, either in a mainstream or specialist school - supporting their learning and development.

    Splash

This project aims to offer extra help to swimming classes and hydrotherapy sessions for children with special needs. We work with various schools which take children swimming each week. The children often require one-to-one attention; therefore the schools desperately need volunteers to enable as many kids as possible to swim each time. You don't need to have any experience or skills in this area - just lots of commitment and enthusiasm. Volunteers would never be left alone with a child or be expected to do anything they were not prepared for.
