Funding
There are several ways that your activity can earn more money. There's lots of information in the Committee Handbook 2011/12, but here are a few ideas to get you going:
Membership subscriptions
An easy way to raise money for your activities. Make sure you charge enough to cover your expenditure but not too much that you put people off joining.
Sponsorship and donations
A great way to get some extra income for your group. Before you look at sponsorship you need to understand the different ways that this money can be received:
-
Sponsorship is an amount of cash and/or in-kind support given to a society/sports club in return for a reward e.g. advertising space, attendance at an event, access to your membership etc. VAT is deductible on sponsorship i.e. if they give you £500, you’ll receive £400 (at 20% VAT rate), so you need to agree the amount plus VAT.
-
A donation is where an external party gives a society/sports club an amount of money/in-kind support to benefit the group/activity and requires nothing in return. VAT is not deductible on donations.
UBU grants
UBU has a limited pot of money with which to support student activities. Due to the large number of student groups that we support, and the relatively limited funds available, we need to judge all funding requirements by strict criteria. Please be aware you may not be receive all of the funding that you think you need.

Fundraising events
Why not hold a fundraising event - club nights, a party, cake sales, bag packing, car washing...
Your alumni
A student club, society or volunteering project offers so much to its members during their time at University. Not only do they participate and progress in their hobby but they can learn valuable skills and even gain qualifications.
After University a large number of past students (alumni) will want to keep a connection with the group they enjoyed being a member of. As a leader it is really important that you embrace this connection. Consider keeping a database of students who are graduating this year. They might be able to offer advice to you as a leader or why not ask them to donate to the club on a regular basis? You could organise an event and invite your alumni to it? Remember, a few pounds from each of your alumni would go a long way to support the group they loved at University.
