Mental Health Awareness
Whether you are volunteering with children, young adults or older people, those with additional support needs or in some way isolated are more likely to suffer from mental ill health. Therefore a general understanding of the basics of what affects our mental health, how mental ill health can affect our behaviour and how we communicate and what we can do to support ourselves and others is beneficial for all working on our community projects. It's particularly valuable for those volunteering on Barrow: a social support group that meet at Callington Road Hospital for patients in the psychiatric unit.

Meeting the Needs of Older People
Older people can suffer from loneliness and isolation due to decreasing mobility, ill health and loss of close relatives. Certain illnesses such as dementia can cause distress and confusion as well as frustration for other family members. This training session addresses issues that face older people in particular and help ensure that your interaction through Daycentre, Jazzhands and Contact the Elderly Tea Parties can be as positive and informed as possible.

Creative Communication
Most of us are lucky enough to have full hearing, fluency of English and are able to communicate our needs, wants and express our ideas and feelings. This session focuses on alternative methods of communication to support others whose means of communication is different. We will look at visual aids, an introduction to Makaton and the way we use English as well as considering the challenges faced by individuals who face challenges to communicate.
